On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Life, Nature and Environment Research Club (LINERC) at University of Rajshahi organized a unique initiative aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation through technology and youth engagement. The organization officially introduced “BioBlitz,” a digital biodiversity documentation app designed to collect, preserve, and analyze information on the diverse flora and fauna found across the university campus.
The initiative reflects LINERC’s growing commitment to environmental research, citizen science, and conservation awareness among students and young researchers. According to the organizers, the primary goal of the BioBlitz app is to create a comprehensive biodiversity database for Rajshahi University, one of the largest and ecologically rich campuses in Bangladesh.
Initially, the project involved a selected group of trained student volunteers. However, LINERC plans to make the platform publicly accessible in the future, allowing students, researchers, photographers, nature enthusiasts, and environmental activists to contribute observations of plants, birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and other wildlife species found on campus.
Large-Scale Biodiversity Survey
The main BioBlitz field survey was conducted on May 20 as part of the World Biodiversity Day celebration. Nearly 90 student volunteers participated in the program. Participants were divided into 15 teams, each consisting of five members.
From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the teams explored different areas of the Rajshahi University campus, documenting species diversity through field observations and photography. The collected information, including species images, GPS locations, observation time, and habitat details, was uploaded instantly to the BioBlitz app.
The event provided students with hands-on experience in biodiversity monitoring and field-based ecological research. At the same time, it demonstrated how digital technology and citizen-driven data collection can contribute significantly to conservation science and environmental management.
Seminar and Prize-Giving Ceremony
A seminar and prize distribution ceremony was held on May 21 to discuss biodiversity conservation, ecological balance, and the importance of research-based environmental documentation.
The seminar featured speeches from several distinguished academics and environmental experts.
Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das from the Department of Zoology emphasized that biodiversity conservation is no longer only an environmental issue but also closely connected to the survival and wellbeing of humanity. He encouraged students to become more involved in field research and biodiversity documentation activities.
Professor Hasanur Rahman from the Department of Botany stated that the Rajshahi University campus possesses remarkable biological diversity. However, due to insufficient documentation and long-term monitoring, valuable ecological information is often lost. He expressed optimism that the BioBlitz platform would help address this gap.
Environmentalist Mahabubul Islam Palash highlighted the importance of technology-driven conservation initiatives in the modern era. He noted that empowering young people with digital tools for environmental protection could eventually expand such efforts to a national level. He also stressed the urgent need to conserve endangered plant species.
Professor Dr. Sabrina Naz, Chairperson of the Department of Botany and chief patron of LINERC, stated that alongside raising awareness, building a research-oriented biodiversity database is essential for future conservation efforts. She praised the enthusiastic participation of students, describing it as one of the major strengths of the initiative.
LINERC’s Vision for the Future
The event was chaired by Md. Abdul Bari, President of LINERC, who presented the key features and future development plans of the BioBlitz app.
According to him, the application currently allows users to upload species photographs, GPS locations, observation times, habitat information, and field notes. In future updates, LINERC plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI)-based species identification, interactive biodiversity maps, analytical research dashboards, species-based statistical tools, and an open-access biodiversity database for researchers and conservationists.
He further mentioned that LINERC aims to expand the BioBlitz initiative beyond Rajshahi University by collaborating with other educational institutions and ecological regions across Bangladesh.
About LINERC
The Life, Nature and Environment Research Club (LINERC) is a student-led environmental and research organization dedicated to biodiversity conservation, ecological awareness, citizen science, environmental education, and sustainability initiatives. Through research activities, field surveys, awareness campaigns, plantation drives, seminars, and technology-based conservation projects, LINERC works to engage young people in protecting nature and promoting scientific understanding of the environment.
The organization has increasingly focused on combining research with digital innovation, making BioBlitz one of its most ambitious projects so far.
At the end of the program, awards were presented to the best-performing teams and photographers based on the quality of collected observations, documentation, and photographs. The best photograph of the entire event received the top prize.
Organizers stated that BioBlitz is not merely a competition, but a long-term movement to connect young people with nature, scientific research, and biodiversity conservation. They expressed hope that the initiative would grow into a nationally recognized biodiversity documentation platform in the future.
