The program included a rally, screening of three wetland-related documentaries, and a discussion meeting. The chief guest was Professor Dr. Mohammad Main Uddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), Rajshahi University. Special guests included Professor Dr. Md. Golam Mortuza, Director, Faculty of Biological Sciences, and Professor Dr. Amirul Islam, Student Advisor, Rajshahi University. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Sabrina Naz, Head of the Department of Botany and Chief Patron of LINERC. Speakers included Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das and Professor Dr. Aminuzzaman Md. Saleh Reza from the Department of Zoology, Rajshahi University. Mr. Sanu Raja Maharjan, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, joined online.

During the discussion, Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das emphasized: “We have yet to fully recognize the importance of invertebrates and aquatic plants in wetland biodiversity. Identifying, studying, and documenting them is essential for wetland protection.” Mr. Sanu Raja Maharjan highlighted the diversity of birds in Nepalese wetlands and discussed the risks of wetland degradation in Nepal. Professor Dr. Aminuzzaman Md. Saleh Reza noted that wetlands are not only fish habitats but also breeding and feeding grounds for roughly 40% of bird species, emphasizing their crucial role in human survival. Professor Dr. Hasanur Rahman remarked: “All life depends on water. Wetlands are essential for both water and biodiversity. The youth must take responsibility for their protection with all their energy and care.” In her presidential remarks, Professor Dr. Sabrina Naz described wetlands as nature’s largely unexplored treasure troves, emphasizing that they must be preserved for future generations.

Alongside the discussion, a photography competition on birds of Rajshahi University was held, followed by prize distribution. The 2026 global theme for World Wetlands Day is: “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” Wetlands are not merely natural resources—they are deeply intertwined with human history, culture, lifestyle, and traditional knowledge. Bangladesh, as a wetland-dependent country, has haors, baors, beels, rivers, coastal wetlands, and mangrove forests that provide habitats for fish and birds and support fishing communities, agricultural culture, folk knowledge, seasonal livelihoods, and sustainable resource practices. For generations, local communities have known when to fish, when to let waterbodies rest, and which plants maintain ecological balance. Such traditional knowledge has been one of the most effective tools for wetland conservation. Unfortunately, unplanned development, wetland encroachment, pollution, and disregard for traditional knowledge have led to rapid degradation. This threatens not only biodiversity but also cultural heritage and local knowledge systems.

World Wetlands Day 2026 sends a clear message: wetland conservation requires both modern science and technology, as well as respect and integration of local and traditional knowledge. Development can only be truly sustainable when it aligns with human culture and nature.

To mark World Wetlands Day (WWD) 2026, the Life, Nature, and Environment Research Club (LINERC) organized a series of activities at Room 150, Department of Botany, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building, Rajshahi University.
